5.Chamber Choir Update: I have now completed the altos (finished sopranos yesterday) and I hope to complete tenor and bass this evening. My goal is to post the list tomorrow (Friday) after school. Things being considered….pretty much in this order: First: Tone quality (richness and maturity of tone, round, warm vowels, diction, breath support and control of vibrato and volume while also listening for 5 voices that will blend best together). Followed by: Demonstrating the ability to learn a part quickly and then sing accurately that part in both sol. feg. and words in the audition, Work Ethic and self-discipline overall, your scheduling conflicts (there were very few….) and lastly grade level. Not being considered as much: Who you are/you name or if you were in Chamber Choir in the past.

6. Attending District Honor Choir Auditions: Nick Adsit-Bass Two, Matt Dobb-Bass Two, Jill Newton-Alto One and Violet Brinn-Soprano Two. Break legs! LAST CALL NOW!!!

8. Chamber Choir List….NOT YET!!

7. For Singers and Acappella Choir Members: Are you interested in being in the Honor’s Choir Program? Cost: $18 to audition for the Regional Honor’s Choir. Auditions are on Saturday, October 13th at Clare High School (A bit north and east of Mount Pleasant, about a 2 and 1/2 hour drive from home). You have to sing one song in latin (Ave Verum Corpus) acappella from memory. I have the music right now if you want a copy. You will also sight-sing a one exercise at the intermediate sight reading level.

If you make it, you will be required to learn another 6 pieces for memory. You will then attend the Regional Honor’s Choir rehearsals/performance on Saturday, Dec. 1st. It costs $20 to take part in this event, held this year at Roscommon HS (an approximately 3 hour drive, north and east of home). You will work under the direction of Karen Nevins (from Lincoln High School, one of our state’s top choir directors). While there, you will have the opportunity to audition for the State Honor’s Choir. You will be asked to sing one of your 7 pieces, for memory. You will NOT need to sight-read this time. Making this choir means you are considered one of the finest singers in the region. (You may also want to go in the night before and stay the night somewhere because the morning starts pretty early….)

If selected, you will be placed in one of 3 state honor’s choirs. A TTBB choir or an SSAA choir or a SATB choir. Each choir is about 200 voices. Making one of these choirs means you are considered one of the top singers in the state. You will be required to learn 4 new songs for memory. You will then spend three days rehearsing in Grand Rapids at the Amway Grand Plaza/Devos Place during the annual Michigan Music Conference. It costs $60 to participate in the State Honor Choir program. You will give a concert for all your friends and family as well as just about every middle and high school choir director in the state. The dates for this event are January 24-26. The concert is in DeVos Hall! If you choose to stay in Grand Rapids each night, you are also responsible for your meals and lodging.

Finally, the students that scored the highest from their auditions for the state choir will be invited to be in a 120 ALL-State Honor Choir. They will basically take the top 40 singers from each of the TTBB, SATB and SSAA State Honor’s Choirs to form this top, SATB choir. Being in this select group means you are among the top 120 singers in the state of Michigan! (And one of the best 30 basses, tenors altos or sopranos.) You will spend $45 to be in this ensemble, plus food and lodging. You will stay in dorms on the campus of Western Michigan University from May 8-10. You will be working with one of the top choir directors in the country, and will give a concert in Miller Auditorium, on the campus of WMU.

Only serious music students should take on such a challenge. One of our own students, Nick Adsit, has gone all the way to the All-State choir so ask him about the experience. This looks very good on those college applications for those of you considering taking up a career in music. But it’s a ton of work, time and money as well. Think about it. You are responsible for all the fees, food and lodging costs and for getting yourself to the various auditions/rehearsals and performances. You are responsible to not only learn but also to memorize all of your music. YOU DO RECEIVE CD’S THAT HELP YOU TO LEARN YOUR PARTS. TAKING PRIVATE VOICE HELPS A LOT AS WELL.

I need to know if you are interested immediately (by tomorrow) as applications are due right away. See me to get an application or for any further information. So far, only Nick has expressed an interest in doing this.

3. The Young Americans are coming Oct. 14-16, 2007!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! www.youngamericans.org for tons of info. on who they are and what they do.

4. Thanks to all from Singers and Acappella that auditioned for Chamber Choir. You have made my job one of the most difficult yet. Bringing this group down to the top 20 (5 per voice part) is nearly impossible….give me time. I listened to all of the auditions again on Saturday and am having a tuff time narrowing the field. It will be posted sometime in the near future.

5. Where were YOU at the cookout yesterday? Those of us that attended had a great time but we had LOTS of food leftover…..when you commit to something DO IT!! This gig cost us $500 but could’ve cost less if we would have had a realistic number of students attending.

6. There is now a Facebook group for the Mona Shores High School choir 2007-2008. JOIN!
