In 2000, the Sailor Classic Foundation was created with the intention of saving 50% of tournament proceeds from the golf tournament to build a fund that will provide perpetual ongoing awards. With a $10,000 initial investment and thanks to many generous donations, market gains, and tournament proceeds, the Mona Shores Sailor Classic Foundation account has reached the $72,000 mark as of 12/07. Sailor Classic Foundation Co-chairman Don Trygstad comments: “Our goal is to build the foundation account to $100,000 and begin distributing 5% (or $5,000 per year) to scholarships and projects to better support all Sailor sports.”
The Sailor Classic Golf Tournament, founded in 1991, has raised over $250,000 for Sailor Athletics. Over the years, money raised has been used for scholarships for financially eligible students and to purchase items such as gym bleachers, sound systems, scoreboards in 2007, and many other needy projects.
The Sailor Classic Golf Tournament, held each year on the third Friday in July, raised $19,000 in 2008 of which $5,000 was placed permanently in the fund. This year’s event will be held on July 17th, 2009 at the Oak Ridge Golf Club with golfers playing either morning or afternoon rounds. Registration begins May 1st. Information regarding the tournament and direct fund contributions can be obtained by contacting Shelly Marine in the Mona Shores Athletic Office at 231-780-4711, extension 8310.
